Equinox Inspiration

The Illusion of Balance

Being a Libra the image of the scales intrigues me. Recently I wrote about the Weighing of the Heart, a treasured personal myth and one that goes back about 5,000 years into human history. Today is the vernal equinox and again the image of the scales comes to mind. At this time night and day are equal as they will be at the autumn equinox on the other side of the Wheel of the year. I will admit that there is an amazing peace all around me in the woods and hills as I write this but the truth is that the very concept of balance is an illusion.

Having been a dancer who struggled to hold my balance and as one who has experienced the Dervish Turn, I know the reality beneath the illusion of balance and I know it is the result of infinitely small adjustments of motion. This is the true dance; it is the dance of the most minute particles of being, the particles that make-up the atoms—it is the moment of Creation that we struggle to recreate at Cern. In truth there would be nothing if there were ever to be “balance”. Now from here we could go into the “No-thing-ness”, we could travel by way of the Kabballah or Tibetan Wisdom teaching but there are others who can teach all this far better than I! Besides I am wearing my Astrologer’s persona now.

The point is that it is in movement that we know ourselves. If we were ever balanced we would be stuck—think of yourself as a scales happily moving up and down, doing what scales do best —weighing things—and suddenly two weights of exactly the same value are placed in you and there you are– profoundly stuck—no movement, no life—just stasis.

We have all experienced this awful frustrating place of being stuck. Then some cosmic magic happens and there is movement and we are able to feel the motion of All-that-Is and our creativity returns.

So twice in the turning of the year do we experience this illusion of balance. It is no doubt a cosmic gift to us to rest before the intensity of the actual return of the new growth to the natural world around us, likewise the exhilaration before the dying of the year at Samhain.

The more astrology I do the more I see how glorious are the imbalances; I see how fascinating are our souls, how unique, how creativity comes into the earth plain through intensity and courage and the choice to take a risk—to act. Inner strength and calm is a dynamic process reminiscent of the Dervish Turn—there is this moment of lucidity when it seems that you are still and the world is moving and you are one with all of it—and yet you yourself are turning, turning still. Blessed be the return of Persephone, the goddess of spring, to Demeter her Earth Mother!

Magical Solstice

January 14, 2014 at 2:09 PM

At the magical moment of Solstice we experience the death-in-life/life-in-death message of the rebirth of the sun reminding us of the eternal validity of the soul. Even if we ignore the multitude of examples throughout the year, here is one vast cosmic reminder. Everything and everyone on earth is invited to notice, to wonder, to contemplate and construct myth. On these days something life-giving happens for the whole planet. No wonder our ancestors worshiped the sun!
The thought that there are people living now who never watch the night sky, who cannot see the Milky way and who spend long hours beneath artificial lights reminds me how enormous a loss we suffer when we use our technology without regard for the natural world.
I began writing this sitting outside watching the sunset on the shortest day about to plunge into the longest night thinking about how on this day the Sun moves from Sagittarius into Capricorn. So into Capricorn I went and Saturn held me in its grasp—slowed me down, limited my time to write and even denied my desire to write. So here at last accustomed to the grip of the lord of winter I begin again. Ahh, yes, following the path of the sun…
So here is my musing on Sagittarius and Capricorn. The contrast is great as we know since the lord of Sag is Jupiter and the lord of Cap is Saturn—the two archtypical opposites—the great benefic and the great malefic of traditional astrology. Ancient Celts would say the death of the Oak King and the birth of the Holly King happens at this moment of Solstice.
Jupiter expands, Saturn contracts; Jupiter bestows, Saturn denies; Jupiter is warm, Saturn, cold. And true to myth, Sagittarians are freedom- loving, expansive, ruled by mutable fire. On the other hand, Capricorns love structure, set limits, and are ruled by cardinal Earth. In my experience the sea goats are a serious bunch and the recent pictures of the planet Saturn with all its rings –beautiful, cold, structured with excellent boundaries does symbolize their determined, strategic nature. The Sages on the other hand never cease to amaze and confound me by what appears to be their limitless mutability. However, Astrology being complex and fascinating, we cannot make sweeping statements about a person based solely on the Sun sign. So lately I have been besieged by charts with Jupiter in Capricorn!
At the moment of Winter Solstice the two energies come together and something profound really does happen—and it is a wonderful reversal! We go from the sign of fire and blessings as we descend into darkness and we go literally minute by minute into the light as we traverse the sign of cold limits and denial! We know according to the sagacious, ancient astrologers that Sag in some placements, and likewise Jupiter, can give us narrow minded religious fanatics and I personally know some amazing, open minded spiritual leaders with suns in cap. So beware of making sweeping sun sign statements; I will venture to state that sea goats have beautiful bones, especially attractive skulls and the centaurs never fail to articulate the most amazing things at awkward moments. Blessings to all and enjoy this crazy winter of contrasts with temps going below zero almost to 60 in the same week! Skye

Scorpio Energy

November 20, 2013 at 3:02 PM

There is deep satisfaction in doing what you love and in being rewarded for it as I have been since the launch of SoulSong. Being an astrologer I cannot state that I leapt into the unknown without any notion of what would happen. I did an inception chart and it showed me that there was excellent potential for success. More important, I was certain that I loved to share insight through astrology, to affirm human potential and to facilitate a deeper understanding of the infinite aspects of consciousness. Since we began I’ve met many wonderful people and had the honor of reading their unique birth charts. There is a part of me that is somewhat skeptical, a part that wants to see creativity and spirituality confirmed in ink on paper and, sure enough, time after time it is right there in the chart.

This past weekend brought many Scorpios –particularly Scorpio Moons. The conventional wisdom is that Scorpionic energy can manifest itself as the serpent or the eagle—meaning, of course, in a base way or an elevated way. Perhaps we might think more accurately that every sign has infinite potential and that depending on the placement and aspects to all other elements in the chart we will see how a soul chooses to manifest the energy of the sign. For me there is nothing so deep and courageous as Scorpionic energy. Were I to go into battle I would take Scorpios—they will always have my back, they will not give up and they will face all situations with courage. I use this analogy because I believe that in some other incarnations I am a warrior, in fact, I believe I know some souls who used to sit around campfires and to ride with me.

The potential for depth, intensity, courage and loyalty is –to my mind– unequaled in Scorpio. The ancient symbol of the caduceus speaks of the healing magnetism which can accompany Scorpio energy. The Lord of Scorpio is Mars and Mars is about action. Mars is about muscles and life-blood and making decisions. Remember, the Heart is a muscle— moving and taking action makes us human—our desire makes us human.

It is disappointing when some people speak of the “sneaky, treacherous” sign of Scorpio. Believe me when I tell you that being sneaky and treacherous is not exclusive to Scorpio—they are just infinitely more successful at it if they choose to be. Please remember—you need to look at the whole chart —all aspects, signs and houses before you venture an opinion concerning the nature of the person in question.

Then there is the notion, particularly prevalent in centuries past, that Scorpios were crude hedonists—again, I beg you to see the whole picture—planets in houses and signs and aspects. Our Scorpios have more self-control than anyone when they chose to use it. What I see most often is great courage to dive deep into the Mysteries. Witness all the Scorpionic energy encountered at the recent festival. All these souls were spiritual seekers—intense and deep. And yes, my friends, the Serpents most often appreciate the profound connection between spirituality, creativity and sexual expression—it is true.

Here I am reminded to speak of the 8th House. Here we find the connection of sex and death. Depending on what level we are seeing or reading we may find a transcendent experience of sexuality and an awareness of the connection between the worlds—the knowledge that deep connections transcend what we call “death”—there are worlds within worlds. And in the more mundane arena we see material inheritance and using the resources of others as in banking and insurance.

Scorpio is Intensity, Clarity, Courage… Celebrate your birthdays Scorpios! All Hail the Phoenix Rising! Skye

Libra and the Equinox

October 9, 2013 at 1:39 PM

We find ourselves having passed with the Equinox into the sign of Libra. SoulSong is a Libran enterprise since both of us are Libras. Our sign is the sign of the scales—the only Zoidion which is truly a symbol. I treasure the image from Ancient Egypt of the heart being weighed in the scales when one comes before Osiris and Isis in Amenti. We pass into Libra as we experience the Autumnal Equinox. In ancient Egypt it was the time for weighing the harvest and giving a just distribution to the people.
The ruler of Libra is the planet Venus/Aphrodite, the Goddess who expresses her love though ancient rituals–singing, dancing, wearing beautiful garments and being surrounded by all things beautiful and precious. In ancient Egypt she is embodied by the Goddess Hathor who is often depicted wearing the horns of a cow or as a beautiful cow. Her priestesses presided over festivals of joy, love and motherhood. She is connected with the journey of the soul to the West, to the halls of Amenti, so we connect her to the seventh house. In our astrology the seventh house is the home of Libra and in ancient astrology the seventh house is the house of submergence. This might be the submergence of releasing our mortal self into the Great Mystery of Death or it might be the submergence we experience when we release ourselves into the love of another human being. However we experience the seventh house we do not find ourselves isolated there. In our seventh house we are confronted with relationships to significant others; the seventh house is where we need to come to terms with our ego.
In some manner we consider the value, we weigh the worth of what we deem precious. This is why Librans can be so adept at being counselors, judges—and yes, military strategists! There is great potential for weighing the value of things.
I must say that sitting surrounded by Michelle’s awesome art is a “Venusian” experience. She sees the value in her subjects and chooses just the perfect energies to allow their souls to shine through in her beautiful portraits.
Now that we have felt the turning of the year and find ourselves falling down into the dark time approaching the winter solstice remember to enjoy the contemplation of the energies of Libra and Scorpio—especially if they are in your chart– they will lead you inward to understand yourself more deeply—and contemplating these energies will help you understand and know compassion for others who work with these energies. More about Scorpio on next post. —Skye

Against a Feather

Ancient ones in Egypt muse upon the Moon,
And she, a new-born smile,
Sailing in the sea of sky.
A new-born smile
Singing down,
Laying down her sacred shape
Into the human heart.

Smiling shape of boats,
Promise of a worthy vessel
To sail across the vastness…
A new-born smile to carry us
Into the isles of the blessed,
Into western lands at sunset.

Mystic boat sailing the sea of sky
Carrying us to Amenti
To have our hearts weighed against a feather.

Each new moon cycle
She reminds us
With her sacred smile
That our journey need not
Be one of sorrow.

Her new born smile
Grows into a light filled wholeness
Reminding us to watch the mystery,
This great beauty,
This boat of light traveling
The star filled sea of sky.
Reminding us on our journey,
Reminding us to come before
Isis and Osiris
Led by Anubis, Lord of the Gates of Death,
In a bright vessel
Smiling, with our hearts,
Which when placed
Upon the sacred scales,
Will balance against a feather …

Don’t forget the new-born smile
Laying in the
Foundation of your heart.

An introduction to Soul Song Arts

July 31, 2013 at 3:44 PM

SoulSong Art

Astrologers speak of the birth chart being a picture of

the energies, challenges and gifts one brings into this

incarnation. For me as an astrologer, the birth chart is

a gift from the Greater Self to the very human individual

who struggles and quests for knowledge over a lifetime. It

is the scaffolding on which we find ourselves building our

life. As such it becomes invisible and upon being revealed

through a reading intimate aspects of our own nature can

be seen in clear light.

Often we have no knowledge of Astrology beyond

the column in the newspaper or the web sites giving

us our daily astrology reading. It becomes easy to

dismiss astrology as something frivolous. Further, when

confronted with the simplistic pronouncements of folks

who know something about birth signs only even greater

doubt arises and one wonders how the ancients could

have been so fascinated with the study of stars!

Astrology is never boring because there is always more to

learn. When I look at the wheel something deep within my

psyche is satisfied. The glyphs awaken cellular memories

of archetypes. The conversations among the celestial

bodies concerning the lives of we who are incarnate who

long to understand ourselves more deeply never ceases to

hold me in awe.

We do not claim to have all the answers to one’s nature,

only to observe some essential aspects an individual has

brought into this world —-these elements, challenges

and gifts once investigated give deep insight into the

mystery of the individual human experience. The wheel is

complex and like other things around us cannot be viewed

simplistically, all of the elements need to be acknowledged

and integrated in order to see the feeling- tone of an

individual.

The SoulSong Astrological reading is intended to

acknowledge this unique feeling-tone and to support that

nature to a deeper investigation and an honest celebration

of all aspects of the person. This is ideally done by Skye

and the client along with Michelle at the first meeting.

First the chart reading opens the door to inner exploration

and recognition, then the intuitive exploration progresses

as we listen to dreams, aspirations, accomplishments,

struggles—the personal symbols and values of our

subject.

Often the clients bring symbols and images they wish to

incorporate into the portrait. Sometimes, to someone with

no knowledge of astrology, the reading is a revelation and

an affirmation of how the person has always felt intuitively.

Our intention is that the combination of our energies can

expand the visual concept into a work of art channeled

through Michelle’s artistic gift which will serve as a loving

reminder of the eternal validity of this individual soul—

the portrait can become a source of inspiration, healing

and comfort in times of doubt and fear—a reminder of the

creative energies that coalesced to become this precious

human being.

Subsequent to our original meeting Michelle and Skye

will communicate with the client as the work progresses to

insure that the client’s wishes are accomplished. This can

be done over the phone or e-mail as well as in person.

A SoulSong portrait as well as an illustrated birth wheel

and accompanying book can be a wonderful way to

celebrate a life-passage. All of these creations can

stand on their own or in combination. An illustrated birth

chart makes a wonderful gift for a new baby’s birth. A

portrait or sketch could mark any milestone, celebrate a

birthday or graduation. The illustrated wheel, portrait and

book could serve as a healing reminder for one who is

struggling with illness and loss—a gift of soul affirmation.

Please feel free to contact us, ask about our work and

discover how SoulSong can support your experience.
